Whats a page title?

Page titles are what is used for the link you click within search results, hence why they are so important. You should ensure they do everything possible to encourage a high click through rate.

The maximum length for a page title depends on how many characters Google will display before truncating the title. This is generally around 50 – 60 characters, but also depends on the characters you use.

If your page titles are being truncated, they may not make complete sense to people reading them, of they may not be showcasing keywords, branding, or calls to action in the search results. It also could look a little unprofessional if your title is suddenly cut-off halfway through a word or sentence.

Although it pays to write a great page title, that isn’t too long or too short, you shouldn’t be too strict regarding page title length. For example, if you have a page title that is 46 characters long or 65 characters long, I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s the page titles that are 15 characters long which are being underutilized, and the titles that are 120 characters that will be heavily truncated, that you should be focusing on.

General advice

Every webpage has its own meta title. It is less formally known at the page title. The meta/page title is set in the HTML code of the page, and it can be seen both in search result pages, and also in the title bar of your web browser.

Need help explaining this to your boss, or web developer?

Use our concise explanation below to explain this issue via email:

Hi Boss,

The meta titles on some of the pages of our website are too long. This means that some of the page title will be cut of in the search result pages, which isn’t an ideal experience for people trying to find our website.

I have a list of all the pages which need fixing, and can rewrite these to be slightly shorter.

Once this is done, I’ll either fix the problem myself by editing our website, or send a list of the pages and new titles to our web developer.
